Happy 10 Year Anniversary to ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’!

SunsetRubdown-ShutUpIAmDreaming

Released on May 2, 2006, ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’ has officially turned 10 years old! It was the second release for Sunset Rubdown and the debut of the full band sound. Spencer’s first release as Sunset Rubdown, 2005’s ‘Snakes Got A Leg’, featured him playing/recording all instruments into his PC with a shitty microphone. Super minimal and raw, it’s an amazing introduction into the world of Spencer Krug.

In January of 2006 Spencer released an ‘EP’ as Sunset Rubdown which included Camilla Wynne Ingr adding vocals on a few tracks. In my opinion that EP has some of the most beautifully sparse tracks that Spencer has ever created including my favorite, ‘Three Colors’,  which features just tambourine, keyboards, and acoustic guitar.

‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’ went to the next level and literally explodes with energy from the very first second of ‘Stadiums and Shrines’.  Along with Camilla, the new full band sound was created by the core Sunset Rubdown band members: Jordan Robson-Cramer, and Michael Doerksen. My favorite track on SUIAD, and possibly my favorite Spencer Krug song of all time, is the 7 minute opus ‘The Men Are Called Horsemen There’. I love it mostly for it’s hypnotic waltz melody and the bizarre imagery in the lyrics. Then there’s this amazing build up to the 3:38 mark that has Spencer belting “If I was a horse I would throw up the reigns if I was you, oh oh oh oh oh.” They rarely played it live when they toured in 2006, but in 2009 they started playing it again. Here’s a great live version from their last tour:
