Operators were on fire last week! Chart Attack ranked them as one of the top bands at the CMW festival, second only to Television! The Toronto shows were followed by equally amazing sets in Montreal and Columbus. It’s looking real good for Operators right now. So excited for what comes next!

Operators take Toronto!

Last night was epic! So much excitement and nervous energy all culminated in a dizzying set. Operators killed it. Incredible 45 minute set of epic dance rock jams. With a sweet surprise at the end. Dave and Brian (aka Japandroids) plus Dustin Hawthorne (ex Hot Hot Heat) got on stage with Dan and Davojka to do their version of one of my favorite Wolf Parade songs, This Hears on Fire. Check the video below and links to glowing reviews of the show.

Operators play tonight and tomorrow at The Silver Dollar before heading to Montreal on Sunday to play Il Motore.

Operators News!

Finally we have some more news on Dan Boeckner’s new project Operators. Looks like the band will be performing 3 shows in May for Canadian Music week in Toronto. Here’s more info from Exclaim.ca:

After making their live debut in the U.S. late last year, Dan Boeckner’s new Operators project has announced its first string of Canadian concerts.

A Facebook event page lists that the band, which also includes Boeckner’s Divine Fits bandmate Sam Brown and Devojka, will play a three-night stand at Toronto’s Silver Dollar Room from May 9 to 11. The dates will be presented during this year’s Canadian Music Week as part of the venue’s annual NeXT@CMW triple-header.

The Facebook page also notes that Boeckner is back in Montreal recording with the group. Stereogum, however, also reported in December that the trio had recorded an EP’s worth of material in Brown’s basement in Columbus, OH.

The Facebook event page states:

Boekner has returned to Montreal from California – w/ Divine Fits drummer Sam Brown (ex- New Bomb Turks) and the divine Devojka – to begin recording his next venture: OPERATORS.

So looks like Operators will have a record out this year!! Exciting! Really can’t wait to hear more news about this project.

Operators – Last night in Columbus

Last night Dan Boeckner’s new band, Operators, played their second show ever at Double Happiness in Columbus,Ohio.

Update: Apparently Chris Deville from Stereogum was in attendance, here’s his review:

“…that’s how Brown ended up with Boeckner and their bandmate Devojka crashing at his home in Columbus, preparing to record a debut EP in his basement, and playing a tiny club show Thursday night at the very small, very dark Double Happiness. Like I said, it’s weird how these things play out.

Also weird was seeing this configuration of musicians with nary a guitar in sight, but that’s 2013 indie rock for you. Instead, Boeckner and Devojka huddled around a table packed out with plentiful keyboards and sundry other electronic equipment while Brown held it down at his drum kit as ever. When word of this project first broke around Coachella time, Boeckner promised guitars and a distinct Fugazi influence, but Operators never once resembled Fugazi’s righteously antagonistic post-hardcore Thursday night. This was dance-pop, pure and simple — hard-hitting dance-pop, but dance-pop nonetheless.

As such, Boeckner’s other name-checked influence, New Order, was in abundant supply. There were touches of LCD Soundsystem in the mix too, and of course any keyboard-driven Boeckner project is going to echo his own Handsome Furs to an extent. But Operators is its own beast, and that beast is formidable: a flurry of funky keyboard riffs, rumbling programmed beats, incessant low-end, and pelvic thrusts, all set to the classic rock chord changes and gravel-throated melodies that have become Boeckner’s signature. It’s a natural progression from Divine Fits, especially in today’s stylistic climate, but who’d have thunk it back when Boeckner was first howling “Shine A Light” with Wolf Parade?”

Here are two video clips:

Reviews from twitter:

Tony Todoroff @designZOMBIE: “Sounded amazing. Pretty much pure electronic with an almost punk edge.”

Joel Oliphint @joeloliphint: “Sam Brown & Dan Boeckner debuting the new band: Operators. You can dance to it. Many knobs.”

Exciting news! Hope to hear the EP soon!
