Happy New Year from Spencer

Last month this site turned 5 years old. To celebrate, the Wolf Parade guys agreed to answer 5 questions from all of you. We collected the questions, shipped them off, and now they have returned.

Here is our New Year’s gift to you! 5 questions with Spencer Krug:

1. What are some of your musical inspirations? Why is it that you stuck with playing keyboards, and are there any keyboardists that you find influential? Additionally, do you have any inspiration from world music, or orchestral works (for example, romantic era composers)?

Here’s what I think about inspiration.

Last week I went to see Tron (obviously). I thought Daft Punk’s soundtrack was fantastic. Easily as good as Jeff Bridge’s performance of a tripped-out baby-boomer trapped in a computer learning Zen principles. But I didn’t go see that movie because I like Daft Punk. I don’t follow Daft Punk, so I had no idea they were doing the soundtrack, and wasn’t expecting to hear anything special that night. It was a surprise. I think most music that I like nowadays, or that I find inspiring, comes to me randomly, and in the form of a surprise. It’s as though I forget how much I like music – or even convince myself that I hate music, in general – until I hear some random thing that excites me, and then I remember how awesome that feeling is; that kind of actual listening; physically experiencing the thing, absorbing it purely, outside of any cultural context. And that feeling in and of itself is what’s inspiring. That, and knowing that it can exist. The music itself, the specifics of it, become secondary.

Moonface gets busy

Just got some news from Moonface. It appears that the dream forum at Moonface.ca was accidentally deleted and thus all the dreams posted were lost. So Mr. Moonface is asking for people to return to the dream forum and share their dreams. The message also states that Mr. Moonface is planning to “get busy” in 2011 and release some music on his site. Sounds good to me.

Hey all.

If you’re getting this, it’s because you’re on the Moonface mailing list.

The Moonface website recently had an unexpected and unexplained problem, in which all of the dreams that many of you submitted to the Dream Forum suddenly disappeared.

Maybe  this was the work of a dream-hating hacker, or maybe all the dreams canceled each other out, like ghostbusters who have crossed their streams or a pit of snakes swallowing each others tails. Or there were just too many dreams, and the weight of them began to shift and move and then flow into conflicting dream-streams that eventually swirled into a giant dream-whirlpool that just spun away down the inter-drain.

Bur probably the internet broke. The internet is always breaking. It is, after all, just a series of tubes and pipes.

So I am writing to say that if you have submitted in the past, and your dream was lost, I apologize, on behalf of the internet. Maybe your dream submission is in your personal records somewhere, and you can resubmit. Please resubmit. That’s the real reason I’m writing. All those random and fascinating stranger-dreams mingling together in one spot was so cool. Maybe we can build it up again – if you have the energy, that is. I know winter is coming and you need to save your strength (except for you, Australia. We all know you’re on the verge of summer… we all know you’re different.)

However, if you do have the time and energy, I believe the site is working again, and I would love to see part two. Hopefully this time your dreams will stick.

Other than that, I’ll just say that Moonface will be getting busy in 2011, so keep your ears peeled for new music. If all goes to plan, it’ll be posted on the website for download before it goes anywhere else.

Until then, be good,
and thanks.
xo,
Moonface

As if he wasn’t busy enough, it appears that in between releasing Enemy Mine and Dragonslayer and touring all over the world, Spencer was also working on a marimba and drum project. The result is the ‘Dreamland EP: Marimba and Shit Drums’ and will be released January 26th on Jagjaguwar. From the press release:

This is physically available only in the vinyl format (approximately 20 minutes of music on a
single side of a 12-inch record). It is also available in digital formats. The vinyl edition and some
digital editions will be accompanied with a dream journal, on which the music is based.

A dream journal sounds very interesting. Check back here for more news on this release.

Just an FYI, I’ll be posting a ton of pictures this weekend of Handsome Furs on tour in Australia! To see the Handsome Furs tour photos check the tour diary section.
