Let’s start with Dante Decaro releasing ‘Kill Your Boyfriend’ EP on Last Gang Records. So great to have Dante back making music on his own. For those of you that listened to Johnny and the Moon, this is a step in a new direction for Dante. Really love the added synths and instrumentation. Excited for what comes next!

Tracklist:
01 “Love Like Thieves”
02 “On The Loose”
03 “Rwanda”
04 “Rachel”
05 “Kill Your Boyfriend”

Operators are set to play Primavera Sound festival! May 31st-June 4th. No word yet on which day/stage they’ll be on. Here’s hoping they’ll be more tour dates!

Wolf Parade have been keeping us up todate on social media with the progress of LP4! If you aren’t doing it already, you should follow them on Instagram.

NOISEFLOOR

Here’s a photo from their recent trip to Gabriola Island, BC to record vocals. Prior to this the band was in several other studios including Robert Lang Studios in Seattle and prepping at Tiger Mountain Studio in BC.

There is no set date for release of the record yet, however the band are playing 3 shows in February in BC:

02.23 & 24 – Imperial – Vancouver
02.25 – Sugar Nightclub – Victoria

These will be the very first shows for the brand new songs to be heard. Super jealous of anyone going. Hope we get some news of a release date soon.

Wolf Parade will also be playing a bunch of festivals this summer. I’m sure there are more to come, but here’s what’s been announced so far:

03.18 – Pot Of Gold Festival – Phoenix, AZ
05.12-14 – Shaky Knees Music Festival – Atlanta, GA
05.26-28 – Boston Calling – Boston, MA

Hopefully we’ll have more LP4 news soon and more tour dates!!

Moonface cancels dates, Dan on new Preoccupations track, Operators add new dates to Euro Tour

Bunch of news to report. First one being that Spencer has cancelled his Moonface tour for November. He posted a long message on his Facebook page that said :

“At first, they were supposed to be Moonface & Siinai shows, in support of My Best Human Face, but then: Flights! Logistics! Work visas for all those beautiful Finns!
It just wasn’t working…
So then, it was going to be a new idea altogether, a fresh take on some almost as fresh tunes, a sort of… surprise? But then: schedules, bands, boooring stuff…
That wasn’t going to work either.
So now, I’m postponing the whole run until next year. Shucks. Right now I’m thinking March / April, but I’m not positive on the dates yet, so anyone who already bought a ticket will be reimbursed.
And at this point I really don’t know what incarnation of Moonface will be on stage: with Siinai, or as the… surprise? Or something altogether different. I honestly can’t say.
For now, I’ll just say I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think it was necessary. I hate doing it though. I do.”

So here’s hoping we get more dates next year.

In other news, Dan Boeckner has lent his vocals to a track on the new Preoccupations record. The 11 minute track titled ‘Memory’ features Dan at the 4:27 mark.

A few months of news..

Let’s catch up on the last 2 months shall we?

The biggest news being Wolf Parade began to play live again. Starting with a warm up run on Vancouver Island under the name ‘Del Scorcho’ and then continuing with sold out residency runs in New York City and Toronto.

Oh and somewhere in there they performed on Late Nite with Stephen Colbert and on CBC Radio Q

Then the festival dates began with Northside Festival in Brooklyn, and then the band headed to London for their 2 sold out shows at The Scala.

London was followed by a solo show in Helsinki and 3 festival appearances:  Best Kept Secret Festival, Northside Fest – DK, and Body and Soul Festival. Here’s a stream of their set from Best Kept Secret Festival:

Wolf Parade’s next shows are in July. You can see the full list of dates on the tour page. They’ve added a few additional dates in September with no word of a more proper tour just yet. In fact, it looks like Wolf Parade will likely take a break after those September dates until 2017.

Happy 10 Year Anniversary to ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’!

SunsetRubdown-ShutUpIAmDreaming

Released on May 2, 2006, ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’ has officially turned 10 years old! It was the second release for Sunset Rubdown and the debut of the full band sound. Spencer’s first release as Sunset Rubdown, 2005’s ‘Snakes Got A Leg’, featured him playing/recording all instruments into his PC with a shitty microphone. Super minimal and raw, it’s an amazing introduction into the world of Spencer Krug.

In January of 2006 Spencer released an ‘EP’ as Sunset Rubdown which included Camilla Wynne Ingr adding vocals on a few tracks. In my opinion that EP has some of the most beautifully sparse tracks that Spencer has ever created including my favorite, ‘Three Colors’,  which features just tambourine, keyboards, and acoustic guitar.

‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’ went to the next level and literally explodes with energy from the very first second of ‘Stadiums and Shrines’.  Along with Camilla, the new full band sound was created by the core Sunset Rubdown band members: Jordan Robson-Cramer, and Michael Doerksen. My favorite track on SUIAD, and possibly my favorite Spencer Krug song of all time, is the 7 minute opus ‘The Men Are Called Horsemen There’. I love it mostly for it’s hypnotic waltz melody and the bizarre imagery in the lyrics. Then there’s this amazing build up to the 3:38 mark that has Spencer belting “If I was a horse I would throw up the reigns if I was you, oh oh oh oh oh.” They rarely played it live when they toured in 2006, but in 2009 they started playing it again. Here’s a great live version from their last tour:

New Moonface & Siinai record!

JAG278-MOONFACE-FC-1400-640x640

As I posted a few months ago, Spencer Krug aka Moonface was preparing a new record with Siinai. Now we have the details! ‘My Best Human Face’ will be released on June 3rd. You can pre-order the record now through Jagjaguwar. Spencer had this to say about the record:

I called this thing My Best Human Face not only because that’s one of my favorite lines on the album, but because I sometimes don’t know who I am, or if I’m as kind and generous and happy as other people. The title speaks to the vague theme of identity-confusion that is loosely woven into the songs — a reoccurring theme I recognized only after the writing was done. It’s a confusion which I think exists for most of us, sure, but that doesn’t mean it has to be the campfire in the middle of our circle; we don’t have to stare into the flames. It’s simply not that important. At end of it all, these are good-time songs, meant to inspire good times in the listener. They were made joyously, with a stubborn love of music at their centre. And while some of the content might be dark or sad, the memories of making these songs brings only gladness and gratitude, and it’s their construction, not deconstruction, that I want to celebrate now.

Tracklist
1. The Nightclub Artiste
2. Risto’s Riff
3. Them Call Themselves Old Punks
4. Ugly Flower Pretty Vase
5. City Wrecker
6. Prairie Boy
7. The Queen Of Both Lightness And Dark

Spencer also wrote about the track Risto’s Riff, which you can hear below:

This song originated with a pleasingly simple riff from guitarist Risto Joensuu, hence the name. For a long time it had a down-tempo, nitty-gritty-rock’n’roll kind of vibe that ultimately left us unable to finish it in a way that we liked, though we weren’t exactly sure why. It was like maybe we were making a song for our dads, not ourselves. But then in the recording studio we changed the beat and started playing it really fast instead, and within an hour the music was finished and put to tape. And then we had a round of high-fives. Not literally, but emotionally. Like with our eyes. Eye-fives.

You can also read about the creation of this record in
a long journal post Spencer wrote throughout the process.

Moonface-Siinai-1

Moonface and Siinai do have some tour dates planned in Europe but nothing in North America at the moment. Spencer will be performing a one off show in Chicago in April and a few others in British Columbia:

Moonface to play one off show in Chicago, new music this summer!

spencerboat

A new interview with Spencer Krug came out today via Pitchfork. In it Spencer talks about the reuniting of Wolf Parade as well as the releasing of new music under his Moonface moniker. It looks like we’ll have a Moonface with Siinai record sometime this summer! And Spencer also mentions he’s recorded the next solo Moonface record as well!

Also announced today, Moonface will be doing a one off show in Chicago at Lincoln Hall on April 17th. Tickets are on sale now. No word if Spencer plans to add more Moonface shows before the Wolf Parade residencies in May.
