Spencer Krug adds summer dates, shares a poem

moonfacelive

Looks like Spencer will be doing a few additional shows this summer! He posted to his facebook page yesterday the additional dates as well as this short poem (that he says is unrelated and was written in 2009):

Standing on a pile of diamonds you’re finally able to see over that totem pole blocking your view of the woods. You see then that all the trees have decided totem pole is the new look and are busy peeling off bark to carve crude face shapes into each others’ sweet green flesh. You make out the bad faces: Face of T-Rex, Face of Racehorse, Face of the A&W Bear, and realize these trees don’t know the right animals. Even the old thick redwoods are gouging wide-eyed into their brothers with long awkward branches; knot-knuckled pine-arms and fur-fingers working Face of Chewbacca into the grain.

Each tree has a true face – just below the lowest bough – which is like a cat face, only less alert. Less aware. You want to shout: No! You look fantastic au naturel! But your mouth is full of the diamonds you’ve been scooping in there while you watch.

New tour dates:

08-27 – Ottawa ON – Pressed
08-30 – Winooski VT – The Monkey House

Spencer Krug shares some news

moonface

It’s been some time since Spencer Krug has let his fans know what he’s up to. After starting a Tumblr and Facebook page last year, things went quiet in the Moonface world. Now many months later Spencer has finally posted again giving his dedicated fans so much news. As I posted yesterday, Spencer will be playing some one off shows and festivals this summer. What he reveals in his recent Facebook post is that these shows will also be testing ground for his brand new material which he hasn’t recorded yet!

And that is just one bit of exciting news, the rest of the post is full of information on what Spencer has been up to musically including:

– He’s has been arranging violin parts for the upcoming Frog Eyes record (due out later this year!)

– Siinai and Moonface will probably have a new release out at some point as Spencer has recorded vocals on tracks he had previously recorded with them before he left Helsinki

– This may lead to Siinai/Moonface going back out on tour together

– Spencer has posted a song from the ‘Julia..’ sessions that was never mastered for us to hear

You can read the entire posting on the Moonface Facebook page. Here’s the unreleased track ‘Still a Criminal’:

Operators and Moonface add more shows this summer

Looks like this summer is going to be pretty great if you’re a eastern Canadian fan of Operators or Moonface. Both have added a few festivals and one off shows in the area.

It was announced last week that both Operators and Moonface would be performing at this years Wolfe Island Music Festival. The festival, which takes place on Wolfe Island (near Kingston, Ontario), has also been host to both Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs. This will be the first time that Dan and Spencer’s bands will be performing at the same festival. Could an amazing duet be possible? Doubtful, but it’s fun to dream!

07-13 – Montreal, QC – Festival d’Ete International
07-14 – Ottawa, ON – Ottawa Blues Fest
08-08 – Kingston, ON – Wolfe Island Musicfest

Moonface to release ‘City Wrecker’ EP

CITYWRECKER

Moonface is back this September with a new EP called City Wrecker. Preview the new release by watching the a beautiful black and white video directed by rairai.fi below. Get more insight into the album from Spencer Krug himself:

Hello everyone and anyone.

I recently made some more recordings under the name Moonface, which take the form of a 5 song EP called City Wrecker, and run at around half an hour.

City Wrecker is the title track of the ep. I wrote it before Miley Cyrus released “Wrecking Ball”, but I cannot prove it. Oh well. In describing the song (and maybe the whole EP) I would say it’s the aesthetic opposite of “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, which is not to say that’s a good thing or a bad thing, just an apple for you to hold up beside your orange. Regardless of all that, my friend Eetu, who recorded this EP, still likes to call the song “Wrecking Ball” and to sometimes call me Miley, but that’s okay cuz we’re buddies.

I lived in Finland for a couple of years, but now I live in a little town nestled in the woods of Vancouver Island. This is a recent move, and so City Wrecker represents the last album I completed in Helsinki. Maybe I will go back to that big icy lighthouse, and all the lovely weirdos within I have come to love, one day, but for now I have used it up.

I have a tendency to wreck the places I live. I am a luster scraper; a green grass imaginer. I wreck places emotionally, as in, even though they stay the same objectively, they somehow worsen in my heart. I wreck their meaning, and so ultimately their function. No more crackling inspiration. I waste my own time. I get bored. I turn gardens into dust bowls.

And I am a city wrecker not just for myself, but for those close to me as well, for my wrecking is a quiet and creeping poison that is hard to identify; hard to see coming through my mist of moods. I fuss, and then still am dissatisfied, making my loved ones feel sad and helpless, angry and confused, and perhaps most terribly, responsible. Though of course they are blameIess and magnificent.

I suppose this is why I have moved so many times in my life. It is not a good characteristic, and one I should work toward eradicating from my personality. But having regret is also unhealthy. So, I am Popeye?

Anyway, all of the songs on this ep, in one way or another, are about places. Going in and going out. Regret and hope. The past and the future. Ducking out early from your own farewell party. That’s why it’s called City Wrecker.

This video is mostly a live session, but then I went and added backup vocals to the mix after the session was recorded. I couldn’t help myself. And then the videographers spliced in a bunch of other footage from the session. They are weak like me. So it’s like 75% live session, 25% video. Or some such ratio.

We made this for a song called City Wrecker, which is also the title of a Moonface EP coming out mid-September. The song is featured on the EP, yes, but on the EP it’s a different version; a proper studio version. Maybe it’s slicker. Louder. Slower?

This session was recorded at an old movie theater in Porvoo, Finland, which has now been turned into Magnusborg Studios. The videographers are Ville Malja and Anssi Nordberg, who make up Rairai Collective, based in Helsinki. They had this to say about the session:

“We wanted to build this simple visual world from where the song could rise up. The main thing was to keep the footage authentic and to capture the essence of Moonface telling his touching story with this wrecked angel figure. We tried not to be too modern.”
